My name is David Emerson, and this blog is a course requirement for the absolutely final academic class that I will ever be required to complete (I hope).
That is not to say that my academic journey or my learning is complete. Indeed, in many ways my views mirror that of the ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi who noted that “the more you know, the less you understand,” and that “not knowing is true knowledge, and presuming to know is a disease.”
Recognizing one’s ignorance and the relative paucity of one’s knowledge is essential in navigating the ocean of information and data currently available. Knowing what you don’t know is an important first step on the road to knowledge, or as more eloquently stated by Sir Francis Bacon, “a prudent question is one half of wisdom.”
